Heat is the silent killer of LED strips. Even high-quality LEDs degrade faster when overheated. Understanding heat management is essential for long-lasting installations.
Why Heat Damages LEDs
LEDs convert electricity into light, but not perfectly. Only 20–40% of input power becomes light; the rest becomes heat. Without proper dissipation, this heat:
· Degrades the phosphor – causing colour shift (white turns yellow or blue)
· Reduces light output – permanent brightness loss
· Shortens lifespan – every 10°C above operating temperature halves LED life
· Weakens adhesive – strips peel and fall
· Can melt solder joints – causing intermittent connections
The 10°C Rule
For every 10°C increase in junction temperature, LED lifespan roughly halves. A strip rated for 50,000 hours at 25°C may last only 25,000 hours at 35°C, and 12,500 hours at 45°C. This is why thermal management is critical.
Where Heat Comes From
· High-power strips – anything above 10W/m generates significant heat
· Poor heat sinking – mounting directly on wood, drywall, or plastic traps heat
· Enclosed spaces – no airflow to carry heat away
· Overdriving – running beyond rated wattage
· Long continuous runs – heat accumulates along the strip
How to Manage Heat
1. Use aluminium profiles
Aluminium draws heat away from the strip and dissipates it into the air. Choose a profile with sufficient depth for the strip's wattage.
2. Ensure ventilation
Leave air gaps around the strip and driver. Avoid fully enclosing strips without airflow.
3. Don't overdrive
Use a driver rated for the strip's wattage, not exceeding it. Dimming reduces heat as well.
4. Use 24V over 12V
For the same wattage, 24V strips draw half the current—less heat generation.
5. Mount on heat-conductive surfaces
Metal surfaces (aluminium, steel) dissipate heat better than wood or plastic.

· Discolouration – yellowing or browning of the silicone coating
· Adhesive failure – peeling or bubbling
· Colour shift – white strips turning yellow or blue
· Dimming – noticeable brightness loss over time
· Visible dark spots – burnt or damaged LEDs
