Why LED Strips Don't Match – And How to Fix Colour Variations

You've installed multiple LED strips, all specified as the same colour temperature. But side by side, one looks warmer, another cooler, and a third has a greenish tint. This is colour variation – and it's more common than you think.

Why Colour Variation Happens

1. Different production batches

LED chips are binned after manufacturing. Strips from different batches may have slight colour differences even if labelled the same Kelvin.

2. Different operating temperatures

Warmer strips shift colour as they heat up. Inconsistent heat dissipation between strips causes visible differences.

3. Voltage drop

Lower voltage at the far end of a run changes colour temperature (typically shifting warmer). Uneven power distribution creates mismatched sections.

4. Inconsistent driver quality

Drivers with poor regulation can output slightly different voltages, affecting colour.

5. Ageing

LEDs degrade over time, and the rate varies between batches. Older strips will look different from new ones.

How to Check for Colour Variation

· Power all strips on at full brightness in the same orientation

· Place them side by side on a neutral white surface

· View from a 45° angle – differences are most visible here

· Use a colour temperature meter (or smartphone app) to measure each strip

Prevention Strategies

1.Order all strips from the same batch

Ask your supplier for a single bin code and verify SDCM ≤3.

2.Use 24V systems

Reduced voltage drop ensures more consistent colour across longer runs.

3.Install proper heat sinking

Aluminium profiles keep temperatures even across all strips.

4.Use matched drivers

Identical drivers for each strip ensure the same output.

5.Label and track

Keep batch records to avoid mixing strips in the future.

What to Do If You Already Have Variation

· Replace mismatched sections with strips from the same batch

· Use colour‑matching controllers – some smart systems allow fine‑tuning individual strip colour (though this can't fix physical differences)

· Accept and design around – sometimes variation adds character (e.g., in accent lighting)

Colour variation is preventable with proper planning. Order from a single batch, use consistent heat management, and choose quality drivers. A little attention upfront saves visible mismatches later.
