How to Choose the Right Aluminium Profile for Your LED Strip

Jul 20, 2026

You've selected the perfect LED strip – high CRI, ideal colour temperature, and reliable wattage. But if you mount it directly to a surface, you risk overheating, visible hotspots, and premature failure. The solution? An aluminium profile.

But not all profiles are created equal. Here's how to choose the right one for your project.

Why Use an Aluminium Profile?

Before diving into selection, understand the benefits:

· Heat dissipation – Aluminium draws heat away from LEDs, extending lifespan

· Physical protection – Shields the strip from dust, moisture, and impact

· Diffusion – Frosted or milky covers eliminate glare and dot patterns

· Professional finish – Creates a clean, built-in look

· Secure mounting – Screws or clips hold the strip permanently

Step 1: Match the Profile to Your Strip Width

The most basic requirement: the profile's internal width must accommodate your strip's PCB width.

Strip Width Minimum Profile Width

5mm- 6/8mm

8mm- 10mm

10mm -12mm

12mm- 15mm

Pro tip: Choose a profile at least 2mm wider than your strip. A snug fit makes installation difficult.

Step 2: Choose Your Mounting Type

Profile Type Installation Best For

Surface-mounted Screws or adhesive to existing surfaces Under cabinets, shelves, furniture

Recessed Routed into plasterboard/wood, flush with surface Ceiling coves, wall grooves, built-ins

Corner / 45° Sits in wall-ceiling or wall-floor junctions Stair nosings, architectural edges

Suspended Hangs from cables or brackets Commercial reception desks, signage

Flexible Bends to follow curves Circular designs, feature walls

Step 3: Select the Cover Type

The cover (diffuser) determines the light quality:

Cover Type Appearance Light Loss Best For

Clear Full brightness, dots visible 0–5% Hidden applications

Frosted Soft glow, minimal dot visibility 10–15% Most residential projects

Milky (opal) Fully diffused, no dots 20–30% Exposed installations, COB strips

Our recommendation: Frosted covers offer the best balance of light output and aesthetics.

Step 4: Choose the Right Profile Depth

Depth determines heat dissipation capacity – crucial for high-power strips.

Strip Wattage Minimum Profile Depth

< 5W/m 8–10mm (shallow)

5–10W/m 10–12mm (standard)

10–15W/m 12–15mm (deep)

15W/m+ 15mm+ or finned design

Rule of thumb: More power = more depth = better cooling.

Step 5: Consider Installation Accessories

· End caps – Seal the profile ends for a tidy finish (essential for IP65)

· Connector clips – Join two profiles end-to-end seamlessly

· Mounting clips – Secure the profile without visible screws

· Screws and wall plugs – For permanent fixing to walls or ceilings

· Double-sided tape – For temporary or light-duty installations (not recommended for heavy profiles)

Step 6: Material Quality and Finish

· Aluminium grade – 6063-T5 is the most common; 6060-T5 for premium

· Surface finish – Anodised or powder-coated prevents corrosion

· Wall thickness – 1.0–1.5mm minimum for structural integrity

· Weight – Heavier profiles dissipate heat better

Step 7: Length and Joining

· Standard lengths: 1m, 2m, 3m

· Longer runs require connector clips

· For continuous runs, plan for expansion gaps (thermal expansion)

Installation Tips

1. Cut to length – Use a hacksaw or mitre saw; deburr cut edges

2. Clean the surface – Remove dust and grease before mounting

3. Mount securely – Use screws for permanent installations

4. Test before closing – Power the strip before snapping on the cover

5. Slide cover gently – Avoid forcing – covers can crack

Common Mistakes

Profile too narrow Strip won't fit or gets damaged

Shallow profile with high-power strip Overheating, LED degradation

Clear cover on exposed SMD strip Visible dots and glare

No end caps on outdoor installation Moisture ingress, corrosion

Relying only on adhesive for heavy profiles Profile falls, strips damaged

Final Thoughts

A quality aluminium profile is an investment in performance and longevity. Match the right profile to your strip's power, choose the appropriate cover, and install it securely – your LEDs will run cooler, look better, and last longer.
